Former Tiger Prince Fielder knocked in all fourTexasruns.  Game two is tonight inTexas.  Daniel Norris gets the start forDetroit. He's 2-and-2 with a 3.88 ERA. Broadcast time is 7:40. Detroitwill finish the season this weekend inChicagoagainst the White Sox.

Martinez Leaves Game

Victor Martinez exited Monday's game against the Texas Rangers in the sixth inning with soreness in his left quad. He will be re-evaluated Tuesday, the team announced.Martinezappeared to suffer the injury in the fifth inning when he came up lame going first-to-third on a Nick Castellanos double. He received attention from Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand at third base, and appeared to point at his left leg.

AL Race

The only real race left in baseball is the AL West, where the Rangers leadHoustonby a game and a half.  The Angels are two games back.   The Yankees are in the best position to be one Wild Card team.  So, it’s betweenHouston,LA, andMinnesotafor that final spot.  TorontoandKansas Cityare in.

NL Race

In the National League,  The Mets, Cardinals and Dodgers will be the division winners, (although the Dodgers haven’t officially clinched yet) and the Cubs and Pirates are the Wild Card Winners.

Monday Night Football

Aaron Rodgers put on a show as the Packers downed the Chiefs, 38-28, on "Monday Night Football". Rodgers threw for 333 yards and five touchdowns to help the Pack improve to 3-and-0. Randall Cobb caught three of the touchdown passes in the victory.Green Bayis one of seven unbeaten teams left in the NFL. Jamaal Charles had three rushing touchdowns for the Chiefs, who dropped to 1-and-2.

Lions

The Lions are 0-3 and play next Monday atSeattleand return to the practice field tomorrow. The Seahawks blanked the Bears 26-0 for their first victory on Sunday.

Red Wings

Jimmy Howard turned away 31 shots helping the Red Wings beat the Bruins, 3-1, at the TD Garden Monday night in preseason action. Drew Miller, Tomas Jurco and Andreas Athanasiou each scored a goal. The Red Wings play again tomorrow night atPittsburgh. The regular season starts October 9th at home against the Maple Leafs.

Pistons

The Pistons held media day Monday amid the usual sense of optimism.  The Pistons will have to find some way to replace Greg Monroe, the departed 6-foot-11 forward who averaged 16 points per game each of the past four years. Training camp is now in full swing, with the first preseason game a week from tonight at home against the Pacers. The regular season gets underway October 27th atAtlanta.

College Football

MichiganStatefifth-year senior defensive end Shilique Calhoun has been named the Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. Calhoun recorded a season-high six tackles in No. 2 Michigan State's 30-10 victory Central Michigan.     The second-ranked Michigan State Spartans host Purdue this Saturday in their homecoming game.

#22Michigan plays atMaryland this Saturday. Through four weeks,Michigan currently sits with the No. 2-ranked defense nationally, as the Wolverines have allowed just 203.8 yards per game this season.Michigan's had an impressive stretch over the last three weeks, as the team has now allowed just 14 points over its last 12 quarters of football.

Michigan Women’s Coach Gets Extension

TheUniversityofMichigansays it has agreed to a contract extension with women's basketball coach Kim Barnes Arico through the 2021 season.  Barnes Arico's three-year contract extension calls for a base salary of $360,000, with chances for performance-based supplemental pay.   Barnes Arico has a 62-40 record in three seasons atMichigan.

Papelbon Suspended

The Washington Nationals announced they have suspended closer Jonathan Papelbon for four games without pay for his role in a dugout incident during which he choked teammate and National League MVP front-runner Bryce Harper.
