Tigers

The Tigers took a no-hitter into the 9th last night, lost it and the lead, but won the game 2-1 on a walk-off triple by Rajai Davis.   Daniel Norris started for the Tigers and pitched a perfect five innings, before coming out of the game when he reached is pitch count limit. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead on a hit by James McCann.  Relievers Buck Farmer, Ian Krol, and Drew Verhagen kept the no-hitter in tact until the 9th.  But in the 9th, new closer Neftali Feliz gave up a triple and a single to blow the no-hitter and the lead.  But, in the bottom of the 10th,  Rajai Davis came thru with a triple to score Anthony Gose for the win.   Blaine Hardy pitched a perfect 10th for the win. The Tigers wrap up the 4 game set with the White Sox today. Justin Verlander takes the mound for the Tigers.  Broadcast time is 12:40 tonight on WBCK.   The Tigers are off tomorrow and then the Twins come in for the final home games of the season at Comerica Park.   Next week, the Tigers head to Texas and Chicago for the final 6 games of the 2015 season.

Rondon Sent Home

The Tigers showcased their young arms last night against the White Sox, and flame-throwing righty Bruce Rondon wasn’t one of them.  Rondon was sent home for the rest of the for lack of effort.  The stocky closer, who usually throws 100 mph will have the winter to contemplate his baseball future.

Red Wings

The Red Wings lost their first preseason game and new coach Jeff Blashell’s debut, a 5-4 overtime loss to the Blackhawks in Chicago.   Antony Mantha scored in the second period for Detroit, and then Riley Sheahan, Teemu Pulkkinen and Luke Glendening all scored in the third to force overtime.  Jimmy Howard allowed three goals on 21 shots in nearly 30 minutes before Tom McCollum gave up two goals on 16 shots.

Lions

The Lions host Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos this Sunday night. Broadcast time is 7:20pm on WBCK.

Pistons Guard Breaks Nose

Detroit Pistons rookie guard Darrun Hilliard had surgery after breaking his nose playing pickup basketball last week.  The team says Hilliard will be fitted with a mask for the next three weeks and will continue all basketball-related activities. The 6-foot-6 Hilliard was drafted in the second round out of Villanova this year.

Boys Soccer

Lakeview beat Gull Lake, 3-2.  Carter Sullivan, Cooper Grosteffon and Sam Lal with Spartan goals.

Girls Cross Country

The Lakeview girls’ cross country team won a SMAC East Jamboree, beating Gull Lake, Mattawan, Loy Norrix and Kalamazoo Central.    Logann Haluszka took first place and finished almost a minute faster than the second-place runner.

Boys Cross Country

Gull Lake won the boys race.  Lakeview was 3rd.

Volleyball

KCC lost to LCC in 3 to fall to 1-9 on the season, and 0-4 in the conference.

High School Football

This Friday, Pennfield plays at Harper Creek.   Broadcast time is 6:35 on WBCK.

MSU’s Clark Injured

Michigan State forward Marvin Clark Jr. will be out for approximately six to eight weeks with a left foot injury.   Michigan State opens the season Nov. 13 against Florida Atlantic, so Clark's availability for that is now in question.

Berra Dead

Yogi Berra, the Hall of Fame catcher renowned as much for his dizzying malapropisms as his record 10 World Series championships with the New York Yankees, has died. He was 90.  Berra died of natural causes Tuesday at his home in New Jersey.

College Football

Michigan hosts BYU this weekend.
