The Tigers lost the first official spring game 4-2 to the Pirates.  It was 77 degrees in Lakeland.  Former Tiger Kyle Lobstein started for the Pirates and pitched two scoreless innings.  Former Tiger Neftali Feliz pitched a perfect inning.   Tigers’ lefty Matt Boyd started and gave up a run on three hits in two innings.   The Tigers tied it up in the sixth as Victor Martinez hit a home run, as he went two for three on the day.  But the Pirates scored a couple of runs in the 7th and hung on for the win.  Miguel Cabrera had a hit and a walk.   The Tigers split squad will be on the road today, with Mike Pelfrey making his Detroit debut in Tampa against the Yankees and Buck Farmer getting the start against the Pirates in Bradenton.

Bombers Sign Three from CMU

Climax native Colton Bradley will play baseball for the Battle Creek Bombers.  The Gull Lake grad is one of three CMU players from Michigan to sign on with the team.

The Bombers say that Bradley, Daniel Jipping, and Jarrod Watkins are the first three signings for the coming season.

 

 

 

College Basketball …in the MAC …

Western Michigan came from behind to beat Toledo, 70-64.  Thomas Wilder scored 18 points and Tucker Haymond added 18 more off the bench.

Central Michigan beat Ball State 65-57 Tuesday night to move into a tie with Ball State atop the Mid-American Conference West Division standings.

Eastern Michigan beat Northern Illinois 75-71.

Big Ten Basketball

Indiana won the Big Ten title outright after beating Iowa on Tuesday, 81-78.  The MSU Spartans entered the day in a four-way tie for second place and in contention for a share of that title had the Hoosiers lost.  MSU plays at Rutgers tonight.  The Scarlett Knights are winless in the league at 0-16, 6-23 overall.  MSU at Rutgers….hear it tonight at 6pm on WBCK.

LeVert Done as a Wolverine

Senior guard Caris LeVert will sit out the rest of the season as he continues to recover from a lower leg injury he suffered in late December.   In making the announcement Tuesday, LeVert said that U of M has given him the chance to live his dream of playing college basketball and earn a Michigan degree.   Head coach John Beilein added that the last two months has been tough for the senior and that his long term health is what is most important.  LeVert played in 103 games for the Wolverines and ends his collegiate career with 1,070 points.  U-of-M hosts 16th-ranked Iowa on Saturday.

Red Wings

The Red Wings host the Chicago Blackhawks tonight at Joe Louis Arena. The puck drops at 8:00 p.m.  Detroit has won their last three games, including a 3-2 overtime win in Dallas Monday. According to head coach Jeff Blashill, goalie Petr Mrazek could be ready to play tonight against the Blackhawks. He was held out of Monday's game with a sore groin.

NBA/Pistons

The Pistons are at San Antonio tonight.  Detroit has won four straight, while San Antonio is riding a five game winning streak.  The Pistons will travel to New York to play the Knicks Saturday.

Golden State Wins #43

Stephen Curry sat out with a sore ankle, and Draymond Green stepped up.  The former MSU Spartan star’s desperation 3-pointer won it for Golden State as they beat Atlanta for their 43rd straight win.

NFL Draft

Michigan State all-time leading passer Connor Cook will be the first Spartan selected in the NFL draft, if CBS NFL insider Pat Kirwan is correct.  Kirwan, an NFL scout, assistant coach and administrator from 1983-1997, projects that Cook will be selected 22nd overall by the Houston Texans.
