Red Wings

The Red Wings host the New York Rangers on Wednesday.  The Detroit Red Wings acquired defenseman Marek Zidlicky from the New Jersey Devils.  New Jersey gets a third-round pick in 2016 for the 38-year-old, who has 23 points this season.  Sunday, the Wings traded two prospects and a second-round draft pick to the Dallas Stars for forward Erik Cole.  Both Zidlicky and Cole are expected to practice with the Red Wings today and could make their Detroit debut against the New York Rangers tomorrow night, as forward Darren Helm and defenseman Alexy Marchenko are out with oblique injuries.

Tiger Injury Status

First baseman Miguel Cabrera was able to take batting practice on the field before the game Monday and DH Victor Martinez ran on the treadmill and took several swings off a tee from each side of the plate.   But relief pitcher Joel Hanrahan will visit a doctor inTexas today for a third opinion on his sore right elbow.  Hanrahan has not pitched in a game since he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2013. He signed a contract withDetroitlast season in hopes of pitching in the second half, but elbow issues stopped his rehab.  One doctor said he may need a second surgery, another drained fluid from his elbow and suggested rest.

Lions-Suh

Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh will be hitting the free-agent market. The Lions decided not to use the franchise tag on the 28-year-old pass rusher, a move that would have cost them 26.8-million-dollars for the 2015 season.  Suh has started all 78 games since turning pro.  He is a four-time Pro Bowler and racked up 36 sacks in five seasons with the Lions.

The Lions are bringing back defensive end Darryl Tapp and quarterback Dan Orlovsky. Both have been re-signed to one-year deals. The 30-year-old Tapp had 17 tackles and a half-sack in 16 games last year.   Orlovsky didn't take a snap last year as Matthew Stafford's backup.

NFL Cap

The NFL is setting the salary cap for next season at more than 143-million-dollars--up more than 10-million from last year and up nearly 20-million from 2013.  The jump can be credited to the league's new television deals kicking in.
