The Red Wings beat the Boston Bruins 6-5 on Sunday afternoon. The Bruins scored in the first 9 seconds of the game.   Pavel Datsyuk had two goals and an assist to surpass 900 career points.  Darren Helm and Henrik Zetterberg each scored twice as well.   It wasn’t the best game for goalie Petr Mrazek on his 24th birthday, but he stayed in there and got the win in the free-for-all at Joe Louis Arena.    The Wings got nine out of a possible 10 points on their five-game home stand.  They improved to 29-18-9, good for 67 points. The Red Wings are in Brooklyn today for a Presidents' Day matinée with the Islanders. The puck drops at 1:00 p.m.

 

Big Ten Basketball

No. 8 Michigan State came from behind to beat Indiana 88-69 Sunday on Valentine's Day.  MSU, who trailed by 10 points 7:58 before halftime, closed the first half with a 9-0 run to take a one-point lead. They went on a 24-3 run to go ahead by 17 points midway through the second half.  Denzel Valentine had 30 points, 13 assists and only one turnover.  Michigan State senior Matt Costello scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.   Bryn Forbes had 14 points.  The Spartans return to action Thursday when they host Wisconsin.

 

Michigan upset 16th-ranked Purdue over the weekend.  The Wolverines are at Ohio State tomorrow night.

 

NBA All Star Game

The West beat the East 196-173 in the highest scoring NBA All-Star game in history.   Russell Westbrook scored 31 won MVP honors for the second straight year.  The Pistons' Andre Drummond had 16 points and 13 rebounds.  It was the final All-Star appearance for the retiring 37 year old Kobe Bryant.   Bryant had 10 points.

 

Pistons

The Pistons are off until Friday, when they play at Washington. The Pistons are in 9th place in the Eastern Conference, with a 27-27 record.

Golf

Vaughn Taylor captured a one-shot win at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am Sunday. Taylor fired a seven-under 65 in the final round to finish 17-under for the championship.  Phil Mickelson finished one shot back.

 

Tigers

There are only 3 Days until pitchers and catchers report to Lakeland. (Fri)  First full squad workout is Tuesday, and the first Spring game is with Florida Southern on Leap Day.  The regular season starts on Tuesday April 5th in Miami, and the Tigers home opener is Friday April 8th against the Yankees.
