The Detroit Red Wings beat Arizona, 5-4 in a shootout.  Gustav Nyquist's shootout goal gave the Detroit Red Wings the win.  Petr Mrazek stopped all three Coyotes shots in the shootout and finished with 22 saves.  The Red Wings are 8-0 in shootouts this season.  Henrik Zetterberg, Mike Green and Tomas Tatar each had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings.  The Red Wings are home to play the Avalanche on Saturday at 1pm.  Buffalo comes in on Monday and Detroit heads to Montreal on Tuesday.

WMU Hockey
WMU’s 8th-ranked hockey team plays #3 Minnesota-Duluth today at 4pm  in Minneapolis.  It’s the NCHC postseason tournament with top-ranked Denver, No. and No. 11 North Dakota also in the mix.

Women’s College Basketball

The Michigan women's basketball team beat Kent State 67-60 in the first round of the WNIT.    They play Wright State Saturday.

Girls Basketball

The Marshall Redhawks face second-ranked Detroit Country Day (24-1) on Friday at 6pm at the Breslin Center at Michigan State University. We’ll have the broadcast tonight at 6pm on 95.3 WBCK.

The winner plays either Ypsilanti Arbor Prep or Freeland at the state final game Saturday at 6pm.  95.3 WBCK will also broadcast that game.

NCAA Tournament

Notre Dame survived a first-round NCAA Tournament scare by pulling out a 60-58 win over Princeton.  Wisconsin advanced with an 84-74 victory over Virginia Tech.  Purdue held off Vermont 80-70.

Michigan and Michigan State have their first NCAA Tournament games today.

Just over a week after a harrowing aborted takeoff of their team plane resulted in the aircraft skidding off the runway on March 8th, Michigan is riding a four game win streak. The Wolverines will be taking on an Oklahoma State team that comes in having lost three in a row. Tip-off is at 12:15 p.m. in Indianapolis.

Michigan State is making its 20th straight NCAA Tournament appearance one year after losing in the first round as Number 2 seed. The Spartans play Miami in Tulsa.  95.3 WBCK will carry the MSU/Miami game starting at 8pm, live from the BOK Center in Tulsa.  The winner will likely face Kansas, the top-seeded team in the Midwest Region, on Sunday.

Indiana has announced that Tom Crean has been fired as men's basketball coach after going 166-135 in nine often lackluster seasons with the Hoosiers.

Pistons

The Pistons are tied with Miami for 8th place in the Eastern Conference. They host the Toronto Raptors tonight.  Phoenix comes in for a game on Sunday afternoon.

Tigers

The Tigers beat the Braves 5-3.  Jacoby Jones hit a long home run, singled, walked, stole two bases and made an outstanding running catch as the youngster tries to win the Tigers’ centerfield job.  Nick Castellanos homered and James McCann and Jose Iglesias each had two hits.   Daniel Norris pitched an out shy of five innings and gave up two runs for the win.   Homer native Josh Collmenter took the loss, giving up four runs in two innings.  The Tigers host the Yankees this afternoon in Lakeland.

Cabrera Leaves WBC Game

Miguel Cabrera exited Venezuela's 3-0 loss to the Dominican Republic on Thursday with a tight back and could miss his team's upcoming World Baseball Classic matchup against Puerto Rico on Saturday.    The United States and Puerto Rico meet at 10pm tonight.  The U.S. came from behind to defeat Venezuela, 4-2, on Wednesday night.

Golf

Emiliano Grillo and Matt Fitzpatrick share the first-round lead in the first Arnold Palmer Invitational since the beloved tournament host passed away last year.
