Red Wings

The Red Wings rebounded from a 7-2 pounding in Philly, and beat the Penguins 5-1 on Sunday.  Teemu Pulkkinen scored twice for the first multi-goal game of his career as the Detroit Red Wings beat up on the Penguins in Pittsburgh 5-1. Petr Mrazek made 42 saves for the win. Marek Zidlicky added a goal and two assists for the Red Wings. Riley Sheahan and Henrik Zetterberg also scored for Detroit.  The Red Wings next game is Thursday night in Florida against the Panthers.

Big Ten Tournament

The Spartans fell apart in overtime and lost to Wisconsin 80-69 in the Big Ten Championship game on Sunday.  With the win, the Badgers get a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, along with Duke, Villanova and Kentucky.  Branden Dawson and Denzel Valentine scored 16 points each for Michigan State (23-11). But the Spartans were outscored 31-10 over the final 11 1/2 minutes of the game and came up short after winning the tournament last year. Michigan State missed all six shots and committed two turnovers in the extra period. MSU will be a 7th seed in the NCAA Tourney, and go up against 10th seed Georgia on Friday in Charlotte.  The winner advances to meet the winner of second-seeded Virginia and No. 15 Belmont. The Spartans knocked out the Cavaliers in last year's Sweet 16.

Michigan Done for Season

Michigan's 2014-15 season has officially come to a close. The 16-16 Wolverines did not get an NIT bid. Coach John Beilein previously said Michigan will not pursue a bid to the College Basketball Invitational, a pay-to-play, third-tier tournament. Michigan had not only hoped to land in the 2015 NIT field, but filed paperwork to host games in the tournament.

MAC Tournament

Central Michigan lost out on an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, losing to Buffalo 89-84 in the MAC Championship game.   The Chips finish the season 23-8 and are headed to the NIT Tourney, since they finished first in the MAC during the regular season. CMU will play at Louisiana Tech on Tuesday in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament.

Tigers Lose to the Marlins

The Tigers lost to the Marlins 4-2.  Tiger’s starter Alfredo Simon hadn't allowed an earned run in his first two spring starts before Miami touched him for three.   Reliever Bruce Rondon was touched up for a run on two hits and a walk.    Both pitchers had good velocity and good stuff and were pleased with their outings.  J.D. Martinez had two hits to raise his spring average to .385. Catcher James McCann raised his average to .400.  The Tigers stay in Jupiter Florida to take on the Cardinals today, with David Price pitching.

Nascar

Kevin Harvick has become the first NASCAR driver since Richard Petty in 1974 to finish first or second in his first four races of the season. Harvick followed last Sunday's victory at Las Vegas with a dominating performance at Phoenix, leading for more than 200 laps and finishing well ahead of Jamie McMurray. Harvick has won the last four races atPhoenix.  Harvick has won five of the last six races at Phoenix and a record seven overall.

Pistons Losing Streak at 10

The Pistons will try to break a 10-game losing streak Tuesday night as they host Memphis at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

High School District Finals

The Bellevue Broncos to host Lansing Christian in the regional semifinals tonight.   Harper Creek moves to regional play tonight, facing an Otsego team that knocked them out of the regional last year.   The Beavers will have to find a way to stop 7-footer Seth Dugan, who has committed to play at Western Michigan University.  We'll have the game on WBCK on Monday night, from Comstock High School.  Broadcast time is 5:45.

West Michigan Wolves

The West Michigan Wolves beat the Wisconsin Whalers 5-1 to clinch the best of three series at 2-1.  Goalie Hunter Vorva had 28 saves.  The Wolves killed off 8 power plays.  The win puts the Wolves into the NA3HL Silver Cup Playoffs at Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva,Illinois starting this Thursday.
