17th-ranked Western Michigan beat Ball State 52-20 to raise their record to 9-0.  The Broncos won their 11th straight game to break a 75 year old record for the longest streak in school history.   Corey Davis caught 12 passes for a conference-record 272 yards with three touchdowns.   Broncos quarterback Zach Terrell went 23 of 34 for 367 yards.  Darius Phillips had a 75 yard touchdown run after an interception, his third of the season.  The Broncos have another Tuesday night game, at Kent State, on Election Day next week.

Bowl Playoff Poll

The first of six College Football Playoff rankings came out last night.  If the season were over, the top four teams would be Alabama, Clemson, Michigan and Texas A&M.   The Aggies (7-1) were surprisingly a spot ahead of unbeaten Washington because the 12-person committee thought they had the tougher schedule.  Ohio State was sixth and Louisville was seventh.  Western Michigan is ranked 23rd, and could be in line for a Cotton Bowl bid if they can finish the season without a loss.

World Series

The World Series is heading to a seventh game after the Cubs' 9-3 romp over the Indians in Cleveland.  Kris Bryant, Addison Russell and Anthony Rizzo belted home runs. Russell’s blast put the game away in the third.  Jake Arrieta pitched into the sixth inning for his second win of the series.  Tonight, the Cubs send Kyle Hendricks, who had the best ERA in the league, against Indians’ ace Corey Kluber.

Pistons

The Pistons beat the Knicks 102-89 last night at the Palace.  The Pistons have won three in a row — all by double digits — since dropping their season opener.  Tobias Harris scored 25 points and Marcus Morris added 22.  They closed out this game with an impressive defensive stretch, holding New York to 10 points in the fourth quarter. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 19 points for Detroit, and Andre Drummond had nine points and 13 rebounds.  The Pistons play in Brooklyn tonight.

Red Wings

The Red Wings travel to Philly tonight.   The Wings have lost 11 straight in Philadelphia.  The Wings host Winnipeg on Friday night in Detroit.  The Wings lost forward Martin Frk on waivers to Carolina three weeks ago, but now they have him back.   Frk was waived by Carolina and is headed to Grand Rapids.

College Basketball

12th ranked Michigan State plays Saginaw Valley State in an exhibition game tonight in East Lansing.

Lions Football

Detroit Lions defensive end Armonty Bryant has been suspended three games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy…again.  Detroit signed Bryant last month. He was cut by Cleveland at the end of a four-game suspension for the same thing.   The Lions say that when they signed him, they knew he might face additional discipline because of an incident that occurred last year. The team says Bryant has met expectations on and off the field since joining the Lions.

The Lions traded a 7th round draft pick to get cornerback Johnthan Banks from Tampa Bay.    Detroit also placed tight end Cole Wick on injured reserve and signed tight end Matthew Mulligan.

The Lions play at Minnesota next Sunday.

Campbell Trophy Finalists

Western Michigan quarterback Zach Terrell is among 12 finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which honors the top scholar-athlete in college football.  CMU Quarterback Cooper Rush is also on the list for the academic Heisman.  Each finalist receives an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. The winner will be announced Dec. 6 and gets an additional $7,000 in scholarship money and the Campbell Trophy.  Terrell is also pursuing an MBA at WMU.

Tiger Woods Returns

Tiger Woods says he is playing his Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas the first week of December. It would be his first competition in more than 15 months if he follows through with it. Woods left himself open to doubt by entering the Safeway Open last month, only to pull out three days later when he said his game was not ready following his two back surgeries.
