A 19-year-old Michigan State University student is facing charges for allegedly making a threat to shoot up a school on a social media site.
Matthew Mullen of Northbrook, Illinois was arraigned Tuesday on a charge of false report or threat of terrorism. He is free on $10,000 bond. Mullen faces up to 20 years in prison.
His attorney told the Lansing State Journal that Mullen is still attending the university.
MSU Police arrested Mullen without incident at Akers Hall Monday afternoon following tips from multiple callers that he had made the threat on the social media app Yik Yak. Police say he did not have a weapon.
The threat did not identify the school but school districts in East Lansing, Williamston and other areas near the MSU campus were put on lockdown for a short period of time.
The threat was the first of two made at MSU this week.
On Tuesday, MSU police issued a “secure in place” order after a bomb threat was made to campus. The emailed threat was quickly found to be a hoax and the campus community was given the all clear.
Police are working to identify the person or persons responsible.
