Battle Creek Schools Has Balanced Budget For First Time In Years

According to a release, Superintendent Kim Carter presented to the Battle Creek Board of Education an independent audit that shows resources were added to the general fund for their 2017 budget year, as opposed to being depleted. The BCPS says that due to this gain, made through budget adjustments in recent years, the Michigan Department of Treasury has removed the district from their Early Warning list.

Suspect In Shooting of Battle Creek’s Kyle Brown Turns Himself In

The Battle Creek Police Department says Monday that the 24-year-old Battle Creek man showed up at police HQ with his family and volunteered himself into custody, and he will be charged with felony murder in the death of 22-year-old Kyle Brown.

The suspect will be named once he's arraigned, the BCPD says.

Marijuana Grow Busted In Homer Thursday

Calhoun County authorities busted a marijuana growing operations late Thursday night after their suspicions were raised during an arrest.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office says that they executed an arrest warrant earlier in the day Thursday to a home on W. Adams St. in Homer, when they observed marijuana plants in the back yard.

Area High School Homecoming Parade Routes To Cause Closures

Road closures are taking place Friday and Saturday in Battle Creek so area schools can hold their homecoming parades.

The City of Battle Creek says that Friday afternoon from 4:30 to 6:45pm, closures will be in effect for Battle Creek Central's homecoming.

Tejada Enters Plea Deal Tuesday, Likely Avoiding Jail Time

on Tuesday, 42-year-old Luis Tejada of Homer pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of lying to a police officer; the maximum penalty for that is one year in jail, but as a part of the plea he may only need to pay fines.

Getter Sentenced In Death Of Robert Barosso

30-year-old Stephen Getter was in Calhoun County Court Monday, and the judge sentenced him to serve life in prison without parole in the death of Robert Barosso. Getter was convicted of first degree murder in August.

Suspects Sought In Battle Creek Apartment Shooting

Battle Creek Police Officers responded to the Arbors of Battle Creek on Greentree Ln. around 9:45pm Monday, to find a man inside an apartment with at least two gunshot wounds in his back and abdomen. The 23-year-old was taken to the hospital and was rushed into surgery, with his injuries described as non-life threatening.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office says that they were called to the 16,000 block of 21 Mile Rd. in Marengo Township, on reports of a crash that landed a car onto its roof and started a fire. By the time deputies arrived, the fire had been extinguished.
