A public meeting will be held on July 30th following the Michigan DEQ identifying unsafe levels of perfluorinated chemicals in two private drinking wells near the Air National Guard base in Battle Creek.

After the City of Kalamazoo tested their wastewater system, they determined that upwards of four times the state standard for certain types of PFAS were being discharged into the Kalamazoo River.

The Calhoun County Health Department and the Michigan Departments of Environmental Quality and Health and Human Services lifted the “Drinking Water Advisory” for the City of Battle Creek

The Kalamazoo County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority says Monday that the $100,000 grant and $1.25 million loan will help with environmental concerns.

The ANG Base has had firefighting foam used on the property in the past, and concerns have been raised recently about the per and poly-fleuroalkyl substances, known as PFAS, that were contained in that foam. The testing is set to begin April 16, and is being carried out to determine if there’s any environmental or health impact.

The City of Albion says on their website Wednesday that an “unanticipated discharge of wastewater” has resulted, leading to partially treated wastewater "in its final stages of clarification" finding its way into the Kalamazoo River watershed.
