The first unofficial summer weekend - Memorial Day - was not over, and emergency and law enforcement crews were responding to two different drowning incidents in southwest Michigan.

The Calhoun County Sheriff's Department is hoping to avoid more by reminding those using personal watercraft:

  1. Lifejackets are required for every occupant of a boat.
  2. Lifejackets should be the appropriate size for the individual - child or adult.
  3. A boater safety class is required for all individuals born after 1978 in Michigan.

Click the video below to hear Sheriff Matt Saxton and Marine Deputy Dave Winder discuss the boater safety course, as well as how they approach potential violations on the water - including drinking and boating.
