Tigers Get Bullpen Help

The Detroit Tigers announced today that the club has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with righthanded pitcher Joel Hanrahan.

Hanrahan, 32, compiled an 0-1 record, a 9.82 ERA (7.1IP/8ER) and five strikeouts in nine relief appearances for the Boston Red Sox during the 2013 season before undergoing season-ending Tommy John surgery on his right elbow last May.

The two-time All-Star (2011, 2012), has played in seven seasons at the major league level, posting a 22-18 record, 100 saves, 3.85 ERA (404.2IP/173ER) and 441 strikeouts in 362 career appearances. He made his major league debut in 2007, spending time with the Washington Nationals (2007-2009), Pittsburgh Pirates (2009-2012) and Boston Red Sox (2013). He ended the 2011 season ranked sixth in the National League with 40 saves, while he ranked fifth in the National League with 36 saves in 2012. Hanrahan, 32, was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second round of the 2000 amateur draft.

Hanrahan will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow surgery effective today. A corresponding 40-man roster move will be announced later today.
