A man fleeing from an alleged assault ended up crashing, causing him and a bystander to suffer fatal injuries Sunday.

The Michigan State Police out of Marshall says that around 2:30pm Sunday, a 38-year-old man from Sherwood fled from where he allegedly assaulted a 38-year-old Colon man in Sherwood Township. Shortly after, the suspect vehicle left the roadway and collided with a 53-year-old woman who was mowing her lawn, and then a tree, on Wattles Rd. near Athens Rd in Branch County.

Both the man and woman were pronounced dead at the scene, with the crash and the earlier felonious assault remaining under investigation.

Authorities say that at this time, alcohol appears to have been a factor. The Michigan State Police were assisted by the Branch County Sheriff's Department, LifeCare Ambulance and AirCare.
