The 32 year old righty hasn't pitched since coming out of a game March 27th with pain in his right triceps.   Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus announced the decision today (Thursday), ending a 10-year streak of avoiding the DL for Verlander.

Verlander is tentatively scheduled to make his season debut in the 5th starter slot on April 12 in Cleveland, the first day he's eligible to return. Ausmus has adjusted his rotation accordingly for the first week of the season.

The Tigers have also placed right hander Bruce Rondon on the DL to start the season, after an MRI found biceps tendonitis. Rondon missed all of last season and had Tommy John surgery, but this is a different issue.

Verlander, the 2011 American League Cy Young Award winner and MVP has allowed 10 earned runs on 13 hits in 16 Grapefruit League innings.

Reporter Jason Beck tweeted that the Tigers rotation will be David Price on Monday for Opening Day.   Anabel Sanchez in game 2, and newcomer Shane Green in game 3.   Alfredo Simon will start game 4 in Cleveland.
