When Up North Was Still Rustic: What Harbor Springs Looked Like In 1900
I don't know about you, but there have been times when Ihave been stuck in a traffic jam just north of Harbor Springs on US 31 and thought to myself, 'How is this a relaxing get away? This is just like Friday afternoon in Grand Rapids!'
But there was a time when being 'Up North' meant you were away from it all. Unfortunately that was in 1906, as photos from the Library of Congress can attest.
Something known as 'The Detroit Publishing Company' took these photographs of Harbor Springs in the early 1900s. They have been archived in the Library of Congress.
They a show a wealthy cottage community that prized HUGE cottages, and lots of privacy. But more importantly, they retained the rustic feel of the town.
