A website that specializes in financial information called Wallethub.com just released a new list of the most patriotic states.

Where does Michigan rank?

We rank 28th out of the 50 states.  Not that great of a showing.

According to the Wallethub report, in 2011, only 38% of Americans said the U.S. was the best country in the world.  It gets worse, in 2014 the percentage of people who thought the U.S. was the best country dropped to 28%.

The number 1 ranked state in the U.S. as far as being the most patriotic was Virginia the worst was New York, big surprise.

According to the report the states were ranked in two key dimensions:

1. Military engagement, which was gauged by the percentage of residents who enlisted in the military in 2013, the number of veteran residents and the number of active-duty personnel who live in the state.

and

2. Civic engagement which was gauged by the percentage of residents who voted in the 2012 election, the volunteer rate, the number of Peace Corps volunteers, the frequency of Google searches for American flags, and the state’s Civics Education requirement.

The state which had the highest percentage of citizens enlisted in the military was Georgia  and the worst was North Dakota, with Michigan coming in at 37th.

The state which had the highest percentage of civic engagement was Wisconsin and the worst state was Arkansas; Michigan ranked 12th.

Wow, I believe Michigan ranking 12th in civic engagement is a great achievement.
