It's one way to try and get blighted homes off the county's land bank rolls. Donate it for training purposes.

That's what's happened at 249 Parrish Street in Battle Creek. The home, a foreclosure owned by the Calhoun County Land Bank Authority, didn't sell after some time. The Land Bank offers foreclosed homes at significant reductions with the hope they'll sell to an owner who will rehab it and make it livable.

As Treasurer Christine Schauer tells WBCK, that doesn't always happen. And the county is left to think creatively about how to unload some properties.

In the case of 249 Parrish, the home ended up being the perfect setup for a fire safety training facility. Now, it is.

Schauer and Battle Creek Fire Chief David Schmaltz talked with WBCK about why this house was selected and what makes it a good structure for such training. Hear their comments by clicking the player below.
