Almost 800 hospitals nationwide are being penalized for being vectors of hospital acquired infection, including one here in Battle Creek.

According to data released Wednesday by the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services, Bronson Battle Creek was on the list, as were 26 other Michigan hospitals; the majority of those in Michigan are in the Detroit and Flint areas.

Kaiser Health News reports that the 769 hospitals identified as having a high rate of patient injuries will lose 1% of their Medicare payments for Fiscal Year 2017, as a penalty. That's expected to be in the millions of dollars for some larger hospitals, including possibly the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor.
