A man is dead after he appears to have crashed his car into a tree in southern Calhoun County.

The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office says that around 11:40pm, Deputies were called to the 2100 block of 9 Mile Rd. near Burlington, to find a vehicle on fire. Burlington and Union City firefighters were able to put out the blaze relatively quickly.

Once the fire was out, deputies discovered the car's male driver, and declared him dead at the scene. Initial investigation shows that the vehicle had been speeding, when it left the road and hit a tree, catching fire and partially ejecting the driver from his seat.

At this time, authorities say that it appears alcohol and speed may have been factors in this crash.

The driver is not yet being named while authorities work to positively identify him, and the CCSO says an autopsy will be performed. The crash remains under investigation.
