One of the major arteries of Battle Creek will still be slow as work continues for another week.

The City of Battle Creek announced on October 4th that construction on East Columbia Avenue between Capital Avenue Southeast and Riverside Drive will continue for another week, surpassing the intended deadline for completion.

Work crews continue to replace the water main - one of the major lines in the city. Traffic will change this week due to the final portion of the project. Riverside Drive will be closed between Territorial Road to Golden Avenue. Drivers on Columbia will be shifted to the south side of the road, still remaining a single lane. There will also be no allowed left turns onto Riverside from Columbia.

City engineers estimate the final portion of the project will be completed in a week, weather permitting. Once completed, the equipment and orange barrels will be removed.

The City has asked those that use East Columbia during your travels to use detours to avoid delays.

The project was expected to be completed by late September. The Michigan Department of Transportation allowed the construction to take place until October 4th as the project took place on M-96, a state trunk line. The project was needed due to a recent history of water main breaks.
