A former teacher and high school basketball coach at the Portage Public Schools has now been sentenced to probation for misconduct with a student.

MLive reports that Cory McNeal appeared in Kalamazoo County Court Wednesday, and was sentenced to two years after pleading guilty to felonious assault; he had initially been facing several criminal sexual conduct charges and charges of possession of child sexually abusive material, and distributing obscene matter to a minor, after the relationship he had with a then 17-year-old student at Portage Central High School came to light.

However, a jury in 2016 found McNeal not guilty on one charge and deadlocked on the others; he had been set to go back to trial in October of this year, but the plea deal for the lesser charge was made instead.
