Detroit Tigers Retiring Lou Whitaker’s #1

The Detroit Tigers announced on Tuesday afternoon that they will retire the #1 in honor of longtime second baseman Lou Whitaker (pictured above with the 1984 World Series trophy).

Whitaker played for the Tigers from 1977 until his retirement after the 1995 season.  "Sweet Lou" as he is known, is still one of the most beloved players in franchise history.  He was the American League's Rookie of the Year in 1978, and was a five-time All-Star during his nearly 20 years of service.  And he was a key cog in the Detroit Tigers World Series championship of 1984.

Lou will be the tenth Tigers player to have his number retired.  He'll join former teammates Alan Trammell (#3) and Jack Morris (#47) on the brick wall at Comerica Park.
