I have not been able to support Michigan’s Attorney General Dana Nessel on much of what she is attempting to do.

Well she just joined a national effort to, in her words, “bring the sword down” on robocalls.

According to reporting by MLive Michigan’s Attorney General announced yesterday that she has joined 42 other AG’s around the country who are asking the Federal Communications Commission to adopt rules which would punish people and groups who illegal employ robocalls and malicious caller ID spoofing.

Attorney General Dana Nessel stated:

Protecting the people of Michigan is our first priority and that’s precisely why I’ve joined attorneys general from across the nation in support of this rule change…The exponential surge in scams through spoofing and robocalls that some Michigan residents have fallen victim to compels us to speak up and urge the FCC to take up these new rules so we can provide better protections for our residents and all Americans.

Many of us are besieged with these robocalls and the new scam of spoofing.  According to the FCC, spoofing is when a robocaller falsifies caller ID information so your phone displays a number other than the number they are actually calling from. These scammers choose numbers that have the same area code that we live in which increases the likelihood someone will pick up the call.  Once they get you on the line they attempt to lure you into giving them your personal information and/or transfer money to them.

When I feel like having some fun I will pick up the call and attempt to get them in a conversation in which I waste their time and attempt to get them to give me their personal information or ask them for money.  They quite often just immediately hang up.

According to the group of Attorney Generals they estimate that “U.S. consumers received nearly 48 billion robocalls in 2018, and Michiganders received 1.2 billion of those”.

I am behind you on this one AG Nessel, go get them!
