Fort Custer appears to be in the run for a proposed intercontinental missile system.

U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow, U.S. Representative Fred Upton and Governor Rick Snyder were among a delegation that toured Fort Custer, sizing up its potential as a contender for the missile base named the Ground Based Interceptor Ballistic Missile Defense Mission.

The base would protect the eastern United States from any attacking long-range missiles by intercepting them in outer space and destroying them. The system would contain 20 missile silos that would shoot down the nuclear warheads.

There would be no nuclear devices on the base itself.
