A video uploaded to YouTube recently has the internet wondering about the phenomenon of ghost ships. The recording comes from Lake Superior, just off-shore from Marquette in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

The video was shared on YouTube by Jason Asselin who describes it as happening,

Saturday evening far off coast from Marquette, Michigan appeared this mysterious ship that had to be gigantic! Almost as if a ghost ship was showing itself to the world.. Even if it was a ship, what could be that tall in these choppy waves?

Is the Ghost Ship the SS Bannockburn?

The SS Bannockburn was a Canadian vessel from Quebec that went missing in November 1902. If sunk, the wreckage has never been found. The ship has picked up the reputation as a ghost ship silently patrolling Lake Superior. According to Wikipedia,

A powerful winter storm raked Lake Superior that night. At 11:00 pm the nightwatch pilothouse crew of the passenger steamer Huronic, also upbound on the lake, reported seeing lights on a ship they passed in the storm which they believed were in the pattern of those of the Bannockburn. However, no signals of distress were observed, and the two ships passed each other without incident.

The Bannockburn was reported overdue the following morning at the Soo Locks, but given the weather the previous night, this was not considered unusual. When she still did not report several days later, however, the fear that she had been lost began to grow.

On November 25 the steamer John D. Rockefeller passed through a field of floating debris near Stannard Rock Light which might have been that of the Bannockburn, though at this time the Bannockburn had not yet been reported lost and the crew of the Rockefeller did not know what might have caused the debris field. By November 30, the ship and crew were officially given up as "lost."

Unexplained Phenomenon of the Great Lakes

Ghost ships and other unexplained phenomenon are not uncommon in the Great Lakes.

Michigan Triangle: Much like the better known Bermuda Triangle, there is an area where ships and airplanes have vanished in and over the waters of Lake Michigan. The southern tip of the triangle is located at Benton Harbor.

Lake Ontario Mirage: There is a story that when conditions are right, it's possible to see clearly 50 miles across Lake Ontario and view the skyline of Toronto from Rochester. The phenomenon occurred just once in 1871 and has become the stuff of legend in Western New York.
