Governor Snyder Vetoes Choose Life License Plate Bill
Friday June 30th, just before the Holiday weekend, Michigan Governor Snyder vetoed a bill that would have raised funds for pro life non-profit organizations in Michigan.
S.B 163, sponsored by Senator Patrick J. Colbeck was vetoed on Friday by Governor Snyder. The bill was summarized as,
The bill would create a start-up cost to the Department of State; however, the current estimated three-year average start-up fee of $15,000 would have to be paid to the Department of State from the Choose Life Fund proposed by the bill. The revenue generated from the fund-raising license plate would be deposited into the Fund, after which the State Treasurer would disburse payments from the Fund on a yearly basis to the Choose Life Michigan Fund.
The bill would have no fiscal impact on local government.
In a press release from Michigan.gov, Snyder stated,
The ‘Choose Life’ license plate is a political message that has the potential to bitterly divide millions of Michiganders and that, in my view, is not appropriate for a state-issued license plate.
Finally, Rep. Tonya Schuitmaker took to Facebook to Comment on the decision.
