Grand Rapids Woman Will Be Part Of The First All-Female Spacewalk

A Michigan native will be part of historic moment in space on October 21st, 2019.

NASA's first all-female spacewalk includes a Michigan native.  Astronaut Christina Koch will join Jessica Meir on the Oct. 21 voyage.  Koch was born in Grand Rapids and raised in North Carolina.

NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Christina Koch spoke Friday on the Space Station's twitter about the importance of the longest space flight for a woman as well as the first all-female spacewalk.

The first all-female space walk was originally scheduled for last March with Anne McClain and Christina Koch but was cancelled due to not having properly fitted spacesuits according to NyTimes.com,

The spacewalk did take place — it just wasn’t all-female. Ms. Koch conducted the six-hour mission with fellow astronaut Nick Hague.  Ms. McClain, whose domestic dispute sparked what is believed to be the first criminal case in space, returned to Earth in June after orbiting the planet more than 3,000 times in 204 days. Summer Worden, Ms. McClain’s spouse, accused the astronaut of identity theft and improper access to her private financial records from space.

The upcoming spacewalks will upgrade the space station's power systems and will repair the alpha magnetic spectrometer.
