How Do We Create An Informed Voter?

Last week I was asking, on my show, how can get more citizens to vote for what a candidate stands for on the issues of the day and not only by party affiliation.

I asked this question because I believe too many people vote via the letter after a candidate’s name, i.e. D or R, without really knowing what their policy stands are and what the consequences of those policies would be.

How do we create an environment in which the voter is more informed about the issues of the day and how a candidate would vote?

I received an email from one of my listeners with what they thought might be a good solution.

That email was from one of my WKMI listeners’ Marty in Kalamazoo and Marty had the following idea:

“Renk, I think I have the solution to getting better qualified people elected. Remove which party the candidate belongs to on the ballot. This would force people to research the candidate.  Hopefully the informed people would make a good choice and even the uninformed have a 50% chance of making a good choice.”

Do you believe that is a good idea?

Do you think voters would be able to figure out by a candidate’s stance on the issues what party they are affiliated with?
