I Love This Idea; Make The Iranian Government Pay
From the moment I heard that the Iranian government shot down one of our drones over international airspace I said to my wife we should make the Iranian government pay for it.
Well a Republican Senator must have had the same reaction as I did. The Washington Free Beacon is reporting that Senator Ted Cruz filed a copy of draft legislation which would requires the Trump administration to extract the cost of the drone from frozen Iranian government bank accounts.
According to sources that cost is between $120 and $220 million dollars.
The draft legislation states that the Congress:
"requires a report on the cost of the United States drone [downed] by Iran … and the barriers to confiscating an amount equal to the cost from frozen Iranian funds"
Senator Cruz's legislation would mandate the Trump administration to report on:
- the cost of our downed U.S. drone
- how much Iranian money is frozen in bank accounts across the globe
- how the Trump administration can use its leverage to recoup the cost from these Iranian accounts.
One Republican aide who has read the legislation told the Washington Free Beacon:
"This amendment is exactly what it looks like…They want to know how much the drone cost, how much frozen Iranian money is available, and what the government has to do to get the frozen Iranian money into Department of Defense coffers to pay for the drone. Twenty-eight lines. Totally straightforward."
I understood President Trump’s reasoning for not going through with a retaliatory strike due to the number of deaths that could occur. At that time President Trump tweeted:
“We were cocked & loaded to retaliate last night on 3 different sights when I asked, ‘How many will die?’ ‘150 people, sir’, was the answer from a General. 10 minutes before the strike I stopped it, not … proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone.”
I do expect him, his administration and Congress to attempt to recover the cost of that drone from the Iranian government, if possible.
