It took 14 votes among commissioners Wednesday night to elect a mayor, and when it was over, Mayor Dave Walters apparently relented and changed his vote in order to clear the way for Vice Mayor Deb Owens to assume the mayoral role in Battle Creek. The process was complicated by an absent commissioner who could have swung the vote another way sooner.

That's the way it works in Battle Creek. After commissioners are elected, they then undertake the electing of the mayor and vice mayor among themselves, and there is always a chance it could be a long night, as was the case this time.

Would you, as a Battle Creek resident, like a more traditional role in choosing the mayor? Would you prefer to elect a mayor in a separate, mayoral election as opposed to this process? Or does this process work fine?
