Many would say that America is addicted to fast food, and I can't say that I completely disagree. I think that America may just be addicted to food in general but fast food is intriguing for other reasons. For one, some people thoroughly enjoy the taste of some fast-food places and the items that have to offer while others are just compelled by the convenience of fast-food restaurants.

There are tons of fast-food chains that are littered all over Michigan including Hot n Now which started in the mitten state and only has one location left. We have all grown up with our favorites like Mcdonald's, Burger King, Wendy's and have seen new places like Sonic's, Chick Fil-a, and Tropical Smoothie Cafe make appearances as well. While some places have been able to adjust with the times, some are not so lucky.

For the longest, Subway was the cheapest option for healthy fast food, unfortunately that trend has not continued. Yahoo Finance goes into detail about how the ultimate demise of their spokesperson; Jared placed the company in limbo. When you couple this with rising food costs and other issues, like antiquated stores, and sales diminishing, and decisions have to be made.

So far, Subway has decided to close any more stores yet and many of their Michigan stores are still running just fine. They did close 631 stores in 2024 but are still the largest chain in the country with 19,502 restaurants. They haven't decided to close any more stores yet this year, but they have removed their meal deal which was any six-inch sub and a choice of a small drink and chips, or two cookies for $6.99.

Subway isn't the only fast-food restaurant that has been struggling around the country, in fact, there have been several that have closed locations all around the country, including here in Michigan. One of the biggest losses we have seen are KFC as they have been closing locations left and right.

Why Are Fast Food Restaurants Becoming Less Popular In Michigan?

Some of the other fast-food places that have closed down recently are:

  • Dairy Queen
  • Hardee's
  • Wendy's
  • Popeyes
  • Papa John's
  • Arby's
  • Burger King
  • Steak N Shake
  • & More

Now that we have identified the closing trend of many fast-food restaurants, what is causing their decline? Most of it is due to the rising costs of goods throughout the country, as inflation continues to rise more people will pass on fast food. Secondly, there are less people working these jobs which means they are open less and people are opting to eat at home.

Lastly, there have been many changes to the fast-food world and most of them have to do with the menu. When there are changes to the menu there is a large possibility that millions of people will be upset at the decision that's made. People stop visiting fast food restaurants when they remove their favorite items from the menu.
