A quiet Saturday in Traverse City, Michigan, took a dark turn as reports of a serious incident at Walmart began to surface.

Amateur video has surfaced of Walmart customers capturing the stabbing suspect before police arrived.

The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Department's most recent update on Facebook was at 9 PM Saturday which said the following:

On 7-26-25 at 4:43 pm, a 42-year-old male subject, acting alone, entered Walmart in Garfield Township and used a folding knife to stab eleven people of unknown ages. A Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Deputy was on scene within minutes and took the man into custody. Citizens in Walmart also assisted in the apprehension and treatment of victims.

What happened at the Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan?

  • Local residents were alerted to a Level 2 Mass Casualty Incident via scanners.
  • The 42-year-old male suspect is in custody.
  • The incident happened near the pharmacy inside the Walmart.
  • Many of the victims were senior citizens.
  • The incident occurred just before 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2025.

The motive is unknown at this time, and the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Department is calling this a random act of violence.  The victims were taken to Munson Healthcare.  Munson Healthcare updated the public on the status of the victims at 9 am.

As of this morning, Munson Healthcare is continuing to care for 11 individuals who were injured in yesterday’s tragic incident at the Walmart in Traverse City. Over the past 12 hours, we’ve seen encouraging signs of recovery from our patients, and their current conditions are as follows: 7 are in fair condition, 4 are in serious condition, and 0 are in critical condition
