It’s not too far-fetched to think that the Upper Peninsula of Michigan could eventually become its own state. But the fact of the matter is that so much money is generated in the lower peninsula, which helps out the upper peninsula that we will most likely never see the two states split apart.

However, now it seems that it’s not out of the question that the entire country of Canada could become the 51st state of the United States. After a recent meeting discussing tariffs, president-elect, Donald Trump told Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in so many words that if he didn’t like the price of tariffs Canada could just become the 51st state in the United States.

Justin Trudeau tried warning Trump that high tariffs placed on Canadian goods would negatively impact U.S. citizens when Trump made the suggestion during a dinner. Although, the AP reports that Trump was only joking when he made the comment.

That would mean that Michigan has a very large new neighbor to the north. I don’t think this would have very much effect on people who live in certain areas around the upper peninsula, because they have pretty much embraced the Canadian/Michigan culture, and that part of the state has a very Canadian feel to it to begin with.

Still, I highly doubt the Canadian Prime Minister will accept this offer to make Canada the 51st state. It’s nice to think about it, but unfortunately, I think the drama will only continue between the two countries. So for now Michigan will have to continue to be just penpals with Canada.
