You never like talking about a staple business in Michigan that has been part of many generations' lives having to close down. This is why we must support locally owned businesses, much like the Golden Brown Bakery in South Haven owned by Dave and Barrie Braschler. It was recently announced by the Golden Bakery that after 86 years of service, they would be finally closing their doors.

The origins of the bakery go all the way back to 1938 when two sisters, Nona MacKenzie and Blanche Rosenberger first opened McKenzie’s Bakery. For 86 years, it stayed within just two families, but now that is coming to an end as they posted on their Facebook page:

After 86 years of serving Southwest Michigan and the city of South Haven, the owners of the Golden Brown Bakery, Dave and Barrie Braschler, have decided the iconic bakery and coffee shop will close its doors for the final time at the end of 2024.

When talking about the legacy and time spent at the Bakery,

Our bakery has been more than just a business. It’s been my home, a community gathering place, and a source of pride. We are grateful for the incredible support and loyalty from our customers over the decades. While it’s bittersweet to come to this realization and say goodbye, we feel blessed to have been a part of this town’s story.

Luckily those who make this bakery a regular stop, the owners won't be shutting down until the end of the year, which still leaves time to put in holiday orders.

This is one of many legendary bakeries in Southwest Michigan that have announced closures over the last few years, as late last year, Boonzaaijer Bakery also shut its doors for good after 62 years.
