I can’t imagine the devastation that my personal life would go through if I were in the path of a tornado.

The trauma it would cause would already be enough to need some kind of compensation or help, but to also lose your business or your personal goods because of the tornado would be devastating that’s exactly what happened in Portage at the beginning of spring in 2024 when a tornado came through portage and destroyed many businesses and lives with the storm.

Now the Portage city council has approved that Kalamazoo County will be giving funds to those impacted by the storm.

WWMT reported that money that was originally approved to go to Kalamazoo County from the state will be allocated for this purpose, and although it is helpful. There were so many people impacted by this that the $1.6 million they’ve allocated will get diced up pretty heavily, as they discussed.

$1 million would go toward businesses, with another $600,000 to homeowners.

When it comes to getting the money, however, those interested will have to provide proof of their needs, as he continued:

Homeowners and businesses will have to demonstrate a need, they’ll have to demonstrate loss. They'll also have to be within the path of the tornado, because these funds are specifically for tornado damage, not any other type of damage that may have occurred over the summer.

Even though the gesture is great and will be beneficial, do you feel like this amount is rather small considering the damage the tornado cost?
