Michigan News Station Under Fire For Referring to U of M’s Tre Donaldson As “Cotton Picking”
I’ll be the first person to say that I was totally doubting the University of Michigan when it came to winning the Big Ten basketball tournament. I had actually picked Michigan State to go all the way, but this is exactly what happens when I pick against the team. I grew up, loving.
It probably wasn’t a smart choice to be against them, but they ended up pulling out the wind in the edge as they prepared for the March Madness. Another example of what might not be the smartest choice to make is referring to one of their star Black players as “cotton picking” when referring to their heart, like a local Coldwater News station did, then quickly deleted.

David Woodham of the Our Coldwater page reported about a Facebook post that was made and quickly deleted from WTVB, which you can see screenshots of here :
WTVB, a Coldwater-based news station, is facing public outrage after a racially offensive comment referencing "cotton picking" was posted on their Facebook page. Community members have expressed their anger and disappointment, calling for accountability.
Probably the biggest embarrassment out of the entire situation is the fact that there are people in the comment section having debate about what that term means and how it is used today and blatantly, ignoring it’s racist to roots, instead of, oh I don’t know, just admitting that saying that about a Black player is probably in bad taste.
Also, the fact that we have just a bunch of redneck bumpkins living in Michigan who use a hillbilly term like that is weird, but ok. But probably the biggest farce are the people who bring up movies like Blazing Saddles, talking about people being too soft.
I want to point out for the record that on multiple occasions, the makers of that film constantly reminded people that it is not making fun of Black people, but the stupidity of racists and the ignorance of it all. At the end of the day, whether you wanna argue what is and isn’t racist, it was a terrible choice of words. Go Blue.
