A fatal fire in Kalamazoo Township remains under investigation.

WOODTV reports the blaze began around 10am Thursday, in the 2000 block of Sunnyside Dr. at a duplex. Heavy smoke and flames were consuming the residence when fire crews arrived, and the intensity of the fire kept firefighters from entering.

Reportedly a woman, who lived in the unit next door, entered the flaming unit and attempted to rescue its occupant, described as her mother. However, the attempted rescuer suffered injuries in the process and had to be taken to the hospital. The 82-year-old trapped inside was taken to the hospital, but she was pronounced dead.

At this time it’s not clear how this fire started, or why it burned so powerfully. Kalamazoo authorities are continuing to look into it.
