State Police are investigating the death of a 19-year-old man who exchanged gunfire with police in Battle Creek this weekend.

Investigators say a family member called police Sunday morning saying the man had taken a relative’s gun and that he “wanted to die.”

The man then called 911 several times himself claiming to be unarmed.

Chief Jim Blocker said that the man ignored “loud and clear” warnings from the officers before pulling a gun from his waistband.

The man suffered fatal injuries in the resulting gunfire.
