It was tradition. It was for bragging rights. And then Michigan stopped playing Notre Dame in football. But coaches Jim Harbaugh and Brian Kelly wanted it and now they've got a two year deal to resume the rivalry.

The University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame made it official Thursday, announcing a two year deal to pick up the legendary rivalry. The first game will be Sept. 1st at South Bend. The following season, Notre Dame will travel to Ann Arbor on Oct. 26, 2019.

Media reports say bad feelings between former Michigan AD Dave Brandon and ND AD Jack Swarbrick led to the end of the series. But talks between new Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and ND coach Brian Kelly. In announcing the resumption of the series, new Michigan AD Warde Manuel said, "A great deal of credit goes to Coach Harbaugh and Coach Kelly for initiating the discussion of scheduling this series. This rivalry is also important for the fans of both programs, and we look forward to renewing one of college football's great rivalries."

The Wolverines lead the all-time series 24-17-1.

ESPN also quotes Manuel as saying negotiations are ongoing for continuing beyond 2019.

Not everyone was happy about the news. Arkansas football coach Brett Bielema was vacationing in Europe when he found out. Michigan will buyout Arkansas to the tune of $2 million dollars.
