We have been hearing for weeks now that many in the Democratic Party, both elected and members, want to abolish the Immigration and Custom Enforcement agency (ICE).

Three Democrat Congressmen and women, Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) and co-sponsored by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) and Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-NY) even introduced a bill that would abolish ICE.

In fact the Speaker of the House Paul Ryan wanted to accommodate the Democratic Party and put their “Abolish ICE” bill up for a vote yesterday.  Even the Democrats who introduced the bill said they would vote against their bill because what the Speaker was attempting to do was a political stunt.  It is a political stunt to put up for a vote a bill that you introduced and presumably wanted to be voted on, if not why introduce it.  Oh wait, were you performing a political stunt?

So in the spirit of compromise Speaker Ryan allowed a resolution expressing support for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials and rejecting calls to abolish the agency to be voted on yesterday.

Interesting how the Republicans are compromising but not the Democrats, that is a story for another day.

The final vote was 244 to 35 with 133 Democrats voting “present”.

Of the 244 yes votes and 35 no votes there were:

  • 226 Republicans and 18 Democrats who voted yes
  • 34 Democrats and one Republican voted no

Who was that one Republican who voted against supporting ICE, well it was none other than Michigan’s own Congressmen Justin Amash who represents Michigan’s 3rd congressional district.

How is a vote to support ICE “inane”, which means silly or stupid?

How is a vote to support ICE stating that the agency is “beyond reproach and reform”?

I guess the only good thing we can say about his no vote is at least he did not vote present.

By the way why do we pay these elected politicians so much money, $174,000 a year, and they cannot even do their jobs by either voting yes or no.  Did these Democrat politicians learn this from former President Obama when as an Illinois state Senator he voted present 129 times.

As Congressmen Scalise stated in a statement concerning the present vote on the ICE resolution:

These are the people last year alone, who removed over 100,000 criminals from our country.

And they want to vote present? My colleagues on the other side are talking about voting present. Let me ask you, Mr. Speaker, when you look at the numbers, last year, ICE Agents, they rescued or identified 518 victims of human trafficking.

What if those ICE agents would have voted present that day instead of rescuing those victims of human trafficking? Luckily, Mr. Speaker, they didn't vote present. They showed up and did their job to keep America safe.

Why is it so hard for elected politicians and their talking heads to show support for ICE who protect us American citizens every day?

I also ask you Congressmen Amash, why is it so hard for you to show support for ICE who protect us American citizens every day?
