The lament of a lonely, neglected wife echoes through the tower of the new Presque Isle lighthouse.

Michigan has more lighthouses than any other state. With a history dating back to 1825, some of the past lingers with the stories and legends of hauntings numbering almost as many as ships that have sailed the Great Lakes. This time we look at one of two Presque Isle lighthouses said to be filled with spirits from the past.

Built in 1870, this is one of Michigan's tallest lighthouses, and the story of the heartbroken wife may be a tall tale. The watchtower is rumored to be haunted by the spouse of a former keeper. Legend has it that he would lock her in the tower or a tunnel when he would trek off to town to visit his girlfriend. Some say he eventually killed her and the wife's lamentations can still be heard on the wind today.
