"Emancipation Day" in Washington, D.C. on Friday, April 15 means federal offices there weren't on the job, which means tax filers get an extra day to get their collective acts together. April 15 being a Friday means that extra day turns into an extra three days, including the weekend.

But, tax filers need to either file their returns or file an extension by the end of the day Monday, April 18 in order to follow the rules.
