P. J. Fleck is close to signing a contract extension with Western Michigan University that in all likelihood would raise his salary to over a million dollars a year and keep him Kalamazoo.

Fleck is already under contract thru 2020. This extension would tack on years beyond that date. The real effect is that his salary would move into seven figures.

Tony Paul of the Detroit News reports the contract extension is close to being finalized, and cites a source with direct knowledge of the situation.

Fleck's name has been tossed around regarding various coaching openings in the past few weeks. Some didn't ask him to interview, and others he wasn't interested in. Taking into account that Fleck's wife, Heather is from Kalamazoo, staying seems like a viable option, especially given the additional compensation.

The report says the extension should be announced before the Broncos take on Wisconsin in the Cotton Bowl in Texas, on January 2nd.

Fleck responded to a question about coaching vacancies by stating in early December that he had not spoken to any other schools about job openings.
