Over a hundred residents are still requiring shelter in Kalamazoo, after a fatal apartment complex fire over the weekend.

The fire broke out Saturday, at the Crosstown Parkway Senior Community Apartments in the 500 block of Crosstown Pwy. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the scene, and witnessed one person on a 7th Floor balcony with smoke and flames behind them. The person was rescued, but they later died at Bronson Hospital.

MLive reports that although the fire was contained to one unit on the 7th floor, the entire structure remains evacuated, leaving up to 150 seniors without a home. The Red Cross worked with the YMCA to set up a temporary shelter, but the situation was complicated, because some victims had need of items like medications that they weren’t able to take as they fled the smoke.

It’s unclear at this time when residents will be able to return to their units, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
