Tigers

The Tigers lost to the Mariners 11-9 last night in Detroit. The Tigers got home runs from J.D. Martinez, Yoenis Cespedes and Nick Castellanos. Reliever Neftali Feliz was tagged with the loss after surrendering five runs, including a grand slam, in the eighth inning.  Starting pitcher Shane Greene was pulled after four and two third innings after giving up five runs on six hits.  Game 3 of the four-game series with the Mariners is tonight in Detroit. Broadcast time is 6:40 p.m. on WBCK as Anibal Sanchez starts for the Tigers.

Joba has a Job

Former Tigers reliever Joba Chamberlain  has signed a minor league deal with the Toronto Blue Jays and is expected to report to Triple-A Buffalo.

City Teams play for NABF Spots

The showdown is set for city league baseball this weekend at Bailey Park. HBC Behnke beat the Scorpions 4-1 last night to win their series 2 games to 1. The Battle Creek Merchants beat the Hurricanes twice on Monday, so it’ll be HBC Behnke versus the BC Merchants.  The winner gets an automatic berth in next month’s NABF world series in Battle Creek.  The loser will head to the NABF Regional in Flint for a chance to make the series.

City Senior Golf Tourney Starts

The City Senior Golf Championship got underway Tuesday at Cedar Creek Golf Club.  Mike Raymond is the early leader.  The 61-year-old shot a 2-under-par 70 and leads Smith Patterson and Mike Tungate, who are a stroke back.

LPGA

The LPGA Tour will make a stop in Grand Rapids this week for the Meijer LPGA Classic Presented by Kraft, at the Blythefield Country Club.

Red Wings Sign Pulkkinen

Forward Teemu Pulkkinen will stay with the Red Wings after he agreed to a one-year contract. Pulkkinen had eight points in 31 games last year with Detroit and 61 points in 46 games for the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Bombers

The South beat the North 3-1 in the Northwoods League All Star game last night in Wisconsin Rapids.  Bombers’ pitcher Alex Hermeling pitched a perfect inning, striking out two.  Battle Creek will be back in action this Thursday at C.O. Brown Stadium to play the Kenosha Kingfish.

USA Wins at Pan American Games

Team USA’s men's basketball team overcame an eight point halftime deficit to beat Venezuela 85-62 in their Pan American Games opener last night in Toronto. Tonight the USA tips off against Puerto Rico. Team USA will also play Brazil this week. The Medal Rounds will be played this weekend.

Soccer

The U.S. men's soccer team plays Jamaica today in the Gold Cup semi-final.

Coyotes

The Battle Creek Coyotes finish the regular season Saturday as they host the Marion County Crusaders. Kickoff is set for 7:11 p.m. at Harper Creek High School. Admission is just $5 for anyone 13 and older.   It will be Kid's Night and Mascot Mania Night next Saturday, July 25. Children 12 and under get in free.  Money raised will help out 11-year-old Sammy Bannister, who is battling a brain tumor.
