Sports: It’s Big Ten Season

MSU Football

The second-ranked Michigan State Spartans play Saturday against Purdue. It’s the Big Ten opener and MSU’s 100^th Homecoming. MSU’s Connor Cook can set the record for Quarterback wins in East Lansing, a record now held by Kirk Cousins. Broadcast time is 10:30 on WBCK.

Michigan Football

The Michigan Wolverines Big Ten opener at Maryland has been moved up from Saturday night to early afternoon, as they hope to dodge Hurricane Joaquin's potential landfall on the East Coast. Broadcast time is now 11am on Mix 104.9 WBXX.

MAC Football

WMU is off this week and play CMU on October 10^th at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo.

CMU, with a 1-3 record, is at home to play Northern Illinois at 3pm. Eastern Michigan (1-3) will travel to take on ninth-ranked LSU (3-0) Saturday. Game time is 5:00 p.m.

Tigers

The Tigers are in Chicago for the season-ending series with the White Sox. It’ll be Alfredo Simon against Chris Sale. The Tigers are in last place, 18 games behind the division-winning Kansas City Royals, but just a half game behind the White Sox. WBCK will join the game following High School football. Justin Verlander will pitch Saturday night’s game is at 6:45 and the finale of 2015 is at 2:45 on Sunday with Daniel on the mound.

Miguel Cabrera has the highest average in all of baseball, and is hitting .334. He leads the American League batting race by 12 points over Red Sox shortstop Zander Bogaerts. He leads Bryce Harper of the Nationals by 3 points.

MLB Races

The Yankees are back in the playoffs for the first time since 2012. Kansas City clinched at least a wild-card berth. Houston has a one-game lead over the Angels and Twins. The Angels are in Texas, the Twins host the Royals and the Astros are at Arizona to finish the regular season.

Thursday Night Football

Justin Tucker's 52-yard field goal with 5:08 left in overtime gave the Ravens a 23-20 win over the Steelers on "Thursday Night Football". Tucker sent the game to OT with a 42-yarder with three seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Baltimore trailed 20-7 early in the third, but scored the next 16 points unanswered to avoid an 0-and-4 start.

Red Wings

The Red Wings host former head coach Mike Babcock and the Toronto Maple Leafs in preseason action at Joe Louis Arena tonight. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. The Wings are 4-0-2 in exhibition play after a 7-2 win over the Penguins in Pittsburgh Wednesday. Detroit plays their final preseason game tomorrow night in Toronto and opens the regular season at home next Friday against the Maple Leafs.

Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser could miss the beginning of the regular season with a lower leg injury. Darren Helm is still out with a concussion and separated shoulder and forward Teemu Pulkkinen has an upper body injury. Center Pavel Datsyuk is not expected to be in the lineup until late this month after he had ankle surgery during the offseason.

Lions

The Lions play the Seahawks Monday Night in Seattle. Linebacker DeAndre Levy returned to practice Thursday for the first time since injuring his hip after the second preseason game. Last season, Levy led the NFL with 117 solo tackles and the Lions with 151 total tackles. Defensive end Ezekiel Ansah, tight end Brandon Pettigrew and tailback Joique Bell all missed practice with injuries. We’ll have the game on WBCK Monday night at 7:20pm.

Girls’ Golf-At the Interstate 8 Championship….

Lumen Christi won the match and the conference title at Bedford Valley with a low score of 395. Charlotte was runner-up. Harper Creek was fourth and Marshall was sixth.

Volleyball

Bellevue 3, Barry County Christian 1. Leading Bellevue were Emily Angus with 10 kills and nine digs.
