The Red Wings beat the Senators in Ottawa 3-2 in overtime on Thursday night.   Thomas Vanek and Tomas Tatar scored for the Red Wings in regulation.  Anthony Mantha scored at 1:07 of overtime after Bobby Ryan's turnover to give Detroit the win.  Jared Coreau, who was born just outside Ottawa and grew up cheering for the Senators, made 26 saves.  The Senators retired Daniel Alfredsson's Number 11 before the game. The 20,011 fans, making it the first sellout of the season, kept the celebration going as they cheered for their former captain — and also a former Red Wing — at the 11:11 mark of every period.  Detroit is plays an outdoor game against the Maple Leafs on Sunday at 3pm in Toronto.

Boys Basketball

Otsego 69, Marshall 50.

Girls Basketball

Marshall 61, Otsego 36.  Jill Konkle led all scorers with 18 points for Marshall. The defending Class B champs are now 5-1.

Bowl Games

No. 13 Oklahoma State beat 10th-ranked Colorado 38-3 in the Alamo Bowl.

South Florida beat South Carolina, 46-39 in the Birmingham Bowl.

Virginia Tech beat Arkansas, 35-24 in the Belk Bowl.  The Hokies came back after being down 24-0 at the half.

Arkansas senior tight end Jeremy Sprinkle was suspended from the Belk Bowl after police accused him of shoplifting from the department store that sponsors the game.  The Belk department store gave players on both teams a $450 gift card to one of their department stores and 90 minutes to spend it. The police report alleges that Sprinkle shoplifted $260 worth of merchandise.

No. 18 Stanford takes on North Carolina in the Hyundai Sun Bowl at 2pm in El Paso.

No. 21 Tennessee plays Nebraska at 3:30pm in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl, in Nashville.

South Alabama plays Air Force in the Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl at 5:30pm in Tucson.

Monday, WMU plays Wisconsin in the Cotton Bowl.

College Basketball

WMU’s Men’s team beat Alabama A&M, 80-50.  Thomas Wilder finished with 19 points and Western snapped a short two-game losing streak. The Broncos built a 14-point lead at the half and started the second with an 8-0 run.  WMU opens conference play next week.

EMU beat Long Beach State, 98-72.

Miami (Ohio) beat Olivet, 89-69.

MSU hosts Northwestern tonight.  The Wildcats are 12-2 and third in the Big Ten.  The Spartans are 9-5 and coming off a conference win at Minnesota.   Broadcast time tonight is 5pm on WBCK.

Lions

The Lions play Green Bay on Sunday night in Detroit in a battle of 9-6 teams.  The winner heads to the playoffs as the first place NFC North Division team.  The loser may or may not get into the playoffs as a wild-card team.  The Giants will be one Wild Card team.  The other could be the loser of the Detroit-Packer game, or Washington, or possibly Tampa Bay.   The NFL has moved the game from Sunday afternoon to Sunday night.  Broadcast time is 7:30 Sunday night on WBCK.

USA beats Russia in Junior Hockey

The United States beat Russia 3-2 Thursday in the world junior hockey championship.  Colin White and Troy Terry scored second-period goals and Tyler Parsons made 25 saves.  The United States and Canada are 3-0-0 in Group B play and have wrapped up quarterfinal spots before their showdown Saturday in the pool finale.
