Big 10 Basketball

The Big Ten Tournament got underway Thursday in Indianapolis.  Ohio State beat Purdue 63-61 and Minnesota eliminated Penn State, 63-56.   The MSU Spartans face Northwestern, after the Wildcats beat Iowa 67-62. Broadcast time is 8pm on WBCK-FM.

The Michigan Wolverines face Illinois.  The Illini took care of Indiana, 64-54. Broadcast time for Michigan and Illinois is 11:30am on Sports 930 the Score.

Girls Basketball

The season ended for the Athens girls’ basketball team, as they fell to top-ranked and undefeated Crystal Falls Forest Park, 49-33 at the Breslin Center.  Athens finishes the season 22-4.  The Indians hung in there until the fourth quarter, when Chrystal Falls Forest Park went on a 17-0 run to end the game.

Boys Basketball Regional Finals

Maple Valley’s season ended with a 70-49 loss to Hillsdale a Class C the regional championship game.  The top scorers for the Lions were Luis Martinez with 21-points and Austin Gonser with 10-points.

St. Philip advances to the Class D state quarterfinals, which will be played Tuesday at Battle Creek Central. The Tigers will play Adrian Lenawee Christian, which beat Morrice 58-36.

Red Wings

The Red Wings host Edmonton tonight. Goalie Jimmy Howard is expected to be back in net tonight after missing Tuesday's game with the flu.

Tigers

The Tigers lost to the Florida Marlins 4-2. Starter Drew Smyly gave up four runs, three earned, on eight hits in three and one third innings.   Former Tiger prospect Jacob Turner pitched 4 innings, giving up one earned run. Turner was traded in 2012 for Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante.

Backup catcher Bryan Holaday batted in both runs for Detroit, with a sacrifice fly in the second inning and with an RBI single in the fourth.  The Tigers host the Washington Nationals today.

Pistons

The Detroit are home Saturday to play the Indiana Pacers.

Lions

Detroit Lions’ Defensive End Willie Young signed with the Chicago Bears yesterday, so the Lions replaced him with defensive end Darryl Tapp.  Tapp played 11 games in Washington last season and has also played with Philadelphia and Seattle.  Detroit also picked up defensive tackle Vaughn Martin, who played with San Diego for four years. He played in three games with Miami last season before he was sidelined with a hernia.

NASCAR

Nascar goes to Bristol this weekend.

Golf

Danny Lee carded a 3-under 68 on Thursday to claim a share of the lead after the opening round of the Valspar Championship.
