Royals’ ace Johnny Cueto pitched a shutout in his first start before his new hometown fans in KC.  He gave up four hits and didn’t walk a batter.  Matt Boyd gave up three runs early in the game before settling down. Boyd was charged with the loss, his first with Detroit, as he gave up nine hits while striking out six in five and one third innings.   The Tigers are 13-and-a-half games behind the first-place Royals.  Tonight, Anibal Sanchez takes the mound for Detroit while Kansas City counters with Yordano Ventura.  Broadcast time is 7:45 p.m. on WBCK.

The Tigers sent Ian Krol to Triple-A Toledo Monday after he gave up four runs in an inning during Detroit's 7-2 loss to Boston Sunday. It's the third time this season Krol has been demoted after making the opening day roster. Krol is the last remaining player with the Tigers from the Doug Fister trade with Washington, although they ended up trading Robbie Ray to get Shane Greene.   The Tigers have recalled Kyle Ryan from the Mud Hens to fill out the bullpen.

Lions

The Lions start the preseason on Thursday at Ford Field.  They held a scrimmage Sunday to get prepped for Thursday's opener against the Jets.
The Detroit Lions have added tight end Jacob Maxwell to the 90-man roster as training camp continues in Allen Park. Maxwell, undrafted out of Louisiana-Lafayette in 2014, was in camp last year with Detroit before being cut. He spent last season on the practice squads in Miami and Chicago.   Tight end Joseph Fauria returned to practice yesterday after missing part of last week because of a knee injury. Defensive end Jason Jones worked out with trainers on the sidelines for the first time during training camp as he continues to rehab from knee surgery.

MSU Football

The Michigan State football team held their annual media day Monday in East Lansing.   It's one of Dantonio's most experienced teams, as 16 of the 19 scholarship senior are of the fifth year variety.  MSU expects to have three scrimmages leading up to the Sept. 4 season opener at Western Michigan in Kalamazoo. The opener at Spartan Stadium against Oregon is September 12.

USA Basketball Workouts for Olympics

Pistons center Andre Drummond is taking part in the USA Basketball Men's National Team minicamp in Las Vegas. Drummond will be working out today and tomorrow at the camp, which will end Wednesday with an exhibition game. He is one of 34 players, including Cleveland's LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, Houston's Dwight Howard and James Harden and Golden State's Stephen Curry and Draymond Green expected at the camp.

Nik Stauskas will have a chance to help Canada qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics.  The former Michigan star was included on his native country's 16-player training camp roster released Monday for the FIBA Americas Championship.
